Once again, William Paterson University has been chosen as a location for a Netflix shoot. The film 99ers is about the 1999 Women’s World Cup Victory that challenged perceptions of women’s sports while also creating a legacy for female athletes.

The film culminates in the legendary 1999 final at the Rose Bowl, where the U.S. and China fought through 120 minutes of scoreless and exhausting play. In a finish that stopped the heart of the nation, the game was decided by a high stakes penalty shootout, sealed by Brandi Chastain’s iconic winning goal.
This picture will be drawn from Jere Longman’s book The Girls of Summer: The U.S. Women’s Soccer Team and How It Changed the World. A book that explores the team’s rise and the impact of their win, even the challenges they faced like equal pay, media representation, and their place as female role models.

Emmy Award winner Nicole Kassell (Sirens, Watchmen) directs the film, which is written by Katie Lovejoy (Love at First Sight, To All the Boys: Always and Forever), Dana Stevens (The Woman King, Fatherhood), and Peter Hedges (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Ben Is Back).
The cast will be led by Zoey Deutch, Emily Bader, Emilia Jones, Alessandro Nivola, and Perry Mattfeld to name a few.
Filming has only just begun April 9 at locations such as Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson, N.J. a historic stadium that once housed the New York Black Yankees from 1931 to 1948.
The film will likely target a 2027 release date as it nears the 2027 Women’s World Cup.
