Rise Again: The Return of Tiger Woods

It has been 14 years since Tiger Woods won his last Masters Tournament. After years of controversy and injuries, golf’s most electrifying star has returned to take his fifth green jacket.

Having not won a major championship since 2008, Woods went into the 2019 Masters Tournament looking for redemption. Woods has been the victim of multiple injuries and four surgeries that held him back for years, as well as having his own personal life tarnish his reputation. However, Woods never gave up, even when doctors told him he might never walk again after having back surgery.

The 2019 Masters Tournament was a special moment for Woods; this was his chance to solidify his place in golf history and have one of the greatest comebacks in modern sports.

In the final round of The Masters, wearing his signature red t-shirt, where he’s won so many other events in, Woods was locked in. The front-nine of the final round Woods was tied with Tony Finau at -11, Francesco Molinari held a two-stroke lead at -13 for most of the final round.

Woods, however, came back in the back-nine. Molinari gave up his lead on hole 15 when he shot his ball into the water twice and Finau breaking down mentally. Woods took advantage of their mistakes and put for birdie on the 15th, tying Molinari and after that, there was no stopping Tiger. Woods would take the lead on the 16th hole.

Woods would eventually win The Masters coming in at -13 for the tournament. After he sunk his final putt, Woods let out a huge roar, the look on his face really showed how relieving it was to finally win again. Soon after, he ran over to his family and hugged his son. This is reminiscent of when Woods won his first Masters in 1997 and hugged his father.

This win cemented Tiger Woods as one of golf’s greatest players. Only being one green jacket behind Jack Nicklaus. Social media blew up after the win, athletes all over the sports world showed their respect and support for Tiger Woods. NBA superstar, Michael Jordan said, “To me, it was the greatest comeback I’ve ever seen.”

Woods’ comeback is nothing short of amazing; he was able to block out all of the people who doubted him and play at the highest level there is. Playing and winning at such a high stakes tournament which he hasn’t won since 2005, is absolutely incredible. The ability he showed on the golf course, after having so many surgeries should be inspirational to anyone.  It’s rare that fans see an athlete come back from utter disaster, however here we are talking about another Tiger Woods victory. Many thought the day would never come.

What we are witnessing is the Tiger Woods of old, where nothing stopped him. Sure, he’s had his ups and downs; more downs over the years. But, he’s now rising again; to a level, we haven’t seen since the mid-2000s. Tiger Woods is a modern day Cinderella Story.
