Razzies Hit the Emoji on the Hammer

David Hunter, Staff Writer

The Golden Raspberry Awards is a ceremony that ‘honors’ the worst that Hollywood has to offer. The ceremony occurs the same day as the Oscars, which highlights the best Hollywood has to offer.

Normally, it awards nine golden raspberries, based on the categories: Worst Movie, Worst Actress, Worst Actor, Worst Supporting Actor, Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Director, Worst Screenplay, Worst Screen Ensemble and Worst Sequel. This was the 38th year the Razzies have been held.

The “Emoji Movie” was given the honor of four Razzies Sunday night, taking home worst picture, worst screenplay, worst screen combo, and worst director. This blatant rip-off of “The Lego Movie” was destroyed by critics. As horrible as it was, it raked in a box office of $217 million against a $50 million budget. The other nominees for the category were “Baywatch”, “Fifty Shades Darker”, “The Mummy” and “Transformers: The Last Knight.”

The most Razzies a film has won is ten, which the dubious honor is held by Adam Sandler’s “Jack and Jill “(2011). Sandler, in drag, even took home the award for Best Actress.

Speaking of drag, Tyler Perry hilariously took home the award for best actress in “Boo2! A Madea Halloween”, beating out Dakota Johnson (“Fifty Shades Darker”). Perry previously won the worst actress in 2014 and was nominated in 2013 and 2017. Overall, he has been nominated for seventeen Razzie awards, mostly for his role as “The Ratty Old Dress or Worn Out Wig,” which was also nominated for Worst Screen Combo. Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson were also nominated.

“Fifty Shades Darker”, the infamously horrible pseudo-erotic novel, won two awards: worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel and Worst Supporting Actress (Kim Basinger). It was nominated for Worst Screen Couple “Any combination of Two Characters, Two Sex Toys or Two Sexual Positions.” Furthermore, it had nominations for Worst Actor, Worst Actress, Worst Director, and Worst Screenplay. How it did not win all of these is a mystery. How much worse could the “Emoji Movie” had to be that it won two more awards than Fifty Shades?

A new, special award, “So Rotten You Loved it,” was introduced this year. “Baywatch”, starring Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron and Alexandria Daddario, won the award. John Fiorino, the entertainment editor, says, “this award was well earned, I loved watching Baywatch.” This film has the so bad it’s good quality. Johnson even went to Twitter to graciously ‘accept’ the award.

The awards had an “In Memoriam” montage of Hollywood men accused of sexual assault. It ended with the caption “Very Sorry, But We Won’t Be Missing You – Or Your Kind.”
