Many people aren’t aware that April is Sexual Assault Awarness month. In fact, many people aren’t even sure what sexual assault is. Sexual assault is any kind of non-consenual sexual contact. Sexual assault can range from cat-calling and suggestive comments, to non-consenual sex, and anything in between. A common misconception is that this only happens between two people when one or more is intoxicated or when they aren’t in a relationship.
The reality is, sexual assault comes in many forms. Yes, it does occur often when there is intoxication involved, but that isn’t always the case. Situations like this can also occur in romantic and sexual relationships that have already been established. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center states that more than ha;f of sexual assaults occur by an intimate partner. More often than not, people forget that “No” means “No” even when “No” becomes a “Maybe” or a “Fine.”
Another common misconception is that sexual assault only occurs with a man and a woman, but that is certainly untrue. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women are sexually assaulted in their lifetime and 43% of men are sexually assaulted in their lifetime. In other words, that’s one in three women and one in four men.
If you find yourself in a situation where you have been sexually assaulted, you can find resources in your state here. They not only offer follow up services, but also education, advocacy, referrals, and accompaniment during law enforcement interviews and medical exams. There are also links to ways you can help others in this situation.
Sexual assault is something that is extremely common, and not talked about nearly enough. I urge you to educate yourself and to enlighten yourself on misconceptions you may have.
This is also a reminder that consent is most important above anything, and to always think before you act or speak in any sexual context.
