Giants fans are livid.
Under GM Joe Schoen, Big Blue has the worst offense in the NFL. They’ve given up 40 sacks for a total loss of 248 yards. They’ve turned over the ball 17 times.
But as this frustrating season draws to a close, there is reason for hope.
The Giants are better on the defensive side of the ball. They’ve allowed an average of only 23 points and 340 total yards a game, and their pass rush has 36 sacks so far this season, ranking fourth in the league. They have one of the better third-down conversion rates in the NFL, and they’ve forced their opponents to turn over the ball nine times.
Most importantly, Schoen’s 2024 draft picks have been a success. All the Giants’ rookies are everyday starters.
Their first-round pick, wide receiver Malik Nabers out of LSU, has 75 receptions for 740 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games. He has been downright dynamic at times, deking opponents into missing tackles and making catches even with defenders in his face.
Then there’s their second-round pick, safety Tyler Nubin from Minnesota. He’s played in all 12 games, racking up 93 total tackles, 53 of them solos. He also has one forced fumble and a pass deflection. He plays physical.
Moving to the third-round pick, cornerback Andru Phillips out of Kentucky has been a great addition to the defense, shoring up the slot/nickel role. He has played 11 games, recording 55 total tackles, a sack, and two forced fumbles.
The bright spots continue with their fourth-rounder, do-it-all tight end Theo Johnson from Penn State, who has been a key contributor to what minimal offense the Giants have put up this season. His blocking has led to the success of the Giants’ next draft pick, running back Tyrone Tracy of Purdue, who has racked upĀ 797 scrimmage yards on 149 touches.
Schoen’s last selection was Darius Muasau, a linebacker from UCLA. He hasn’t been as productive as the other members of his draft class, but he has still amassed 14 tackles and made an interception in his NFL debut against the Vikings. He does a great job tracking the ball and made one catch even after a teammate ran into him, sending him spinning to the ground.
Fans have every right to be mad about how the season is going. But the future for the franchise is bright.
Give Schoen some time to cook.
