About
Since 1936, The Beacon has had a mission to provide an equal access forum for students to communicate, debate and discuss a spectrum of issues that encourage intellectual growth, the discovery of new ideas, and enlightenment.
The Beacon seeks to promote and challenge ideologies, explain life experiences, and offer alternative schools of thought for the acquisition of wisdom. The Beacon’s content represents a tapestry of diverse individuals publishing to stimulate critical thinking and a better understanding of the world, its people, and their various views. The Beacon encourages fresh and mature minds alike to express their views.
By students, for the world.
Beacon Editorial Process
Students run the Beacon. We receive guidance from our adviser, Dr. Nick Hirshon, and the advisory board, a group of journalists whose names are listed below, as well as financial support from the ReNews Project, a nonprofit that revives student newspapers at HBCU’s and Hispanic-serving institutions. However, neither our adviser, the advisory board, nor the ReNews Project sees the final version of stories before we post them. After publication, the writers may solicit advice from the adviser, advisory board, editor-in-chief, or managing editor.
