On Tuesday, October 21st, the university held a Mental Health Wellness Walk for students and faculty at Speert Green. Around the grass were tables run by campus organizations such as WP Campus Police and the Counseling, Health, and Wellness Center. There were also tables run by local organizations such as the Mental Health Association of Passaic County.
Some tables offered free merchandise, which included mental health awareness bracelets. Additionally, one table offered colored beaded necklaces. The colors correspond to different means, such as the loss of a loved one, loss of a friend, overall mental health, suicide prevention support, and more.
Most students attending the event could be seen wearing multiple beads, showing their support for friends, family, or themselves.
The event kicked off with multiple speakers. They spoke of the importance of understanding that everyone can suffer from mental health issues, no matter their race, gender, ethnicity, or age. Another point made was that it is okay not to be strong all the time and that it is okay to struggle. It was also discussed that although it is sometimes difficult to speak up about your struggles, it is okay to do so and receive the support you need.
The event also featured two musical pieces that spoke to the importance of loving and supporting one another. The performances were uplifting and motivational for the listeners.
The walk was a circle, starting at Speert Green, looping around Grant Hall, and returning to Speert Green. Along the path were signs with motivational words to inspire the readers to speak out in support of mental health awareness.
Upon completing the walk, participants were offered water and pizza and encouraged to explore the tables set up.
The event was successful in drawing a large crowd and sharing a timeless message: mental health is a significant part of our society, and we must raise awareness about the topic.
