William Paterson University is being thrown back in time to 1984 for the filming of the upcoming Netflix feature “The Fight for ’84.”
The film is set to star Jamie Foxx, where he will be playing the coach of the US Olympic boxing team after a plane crash in 1980 where the entire team and staff were killed in a plane crash.
While there is much unknown as to what the building is supposed to be in the film, I had a quick chat with some of the crew setting up the set, where one crew member stated, “This is for the new upcoming Netflix movie that Jamie Foxx is in. There isn’t much allowed to be said, but it’s obvious that it has to do with the Olympics.” When asked about what the set was meant for.
Mr. Foxx was spotted in neighboring towns like Passaic filming for this upcoming movie, and he seems to be enjoying his time in New Jersey. There is no set release date, but Netflix’s magazine TUDUM has said to keep an eye out for the sports drama soon on the streaming service.
William Paterson is no stranger to being a filming location, as the university has been used to film Spielberg’s remake of the famous musical ‘West Side Story.’ Transforming the small Business Development Center in Paterson, N.J., into the hangout for the ‘Sharks’ in the film back in 2019.

New Jersey has been in the spotlight in recent years, as it is said Hollywood is making its way to the east coast due to a large influx of major studio investments and a competitive state tax credit program that began in 2018.
With Lionsgate already having a studio in Newark, N.J., Netflix is also currently working on a $900 million production studio at Fort Monmouth.
With access to the New York City skyline and the city-like aesthetic in New Jersey cities and towns, New Jersey is for sure going to become a big filming location in the upcoming years.
