William Paterson is known for its diversity and it is the demonstration of events such as the Caribbean Gala which took place last Friday, Oct. 10, 2025, that continues to cultivate such diversity among students.
“No matter where you are in the world, everyone has a different culture, everyone has a different perspective on things. And that’s really beautiful to look at and think about.” stated, the President of the Caribbean and Indigenous Student Association, Aidan Montanez.
The event began with up-beat Caribbean music, shifted to a welcoming presentation, and then went straight into the eating of Caribbean cuisine all while enjoying the dance performance of The Pioneer Dancers. The amazing performance was backed by music promoting the cultures of the indigenous people.
While the attendees sat at the table, discussion was made, reminding everyone of the significance that these cultures have on students and that they should not be forgotten.

When asked what impact awareness of the indigenous peoples’ gets across, a fellow peer said, “It gets across to people that they should go out, that they should learn about different people, different ideas. Because if you stay stagnant and looking at one thing, you’re limiting yourself.”
The message then, to take away from this is to broaden our knowledge and understanding of different people. It is through such an understanding that, as students and future professionals, one can prepare themselves to make a social change in society.
As was constantly reminded, during the historical presentation, it is important for students to ‘go out’, learn a new culture, learn a new language or meet new people.
Events such as the Caribbean Gala, the upcoming Hispanic Heritage Month Gala or the various civic engagement opportunities on campus are essential for diversifying student experiences so as to make William Paterson and the broader community a culturally aware one.
