About Us 70 years of student journalism.
The Beacon first printed in 1936 under the leadership of then twenty-five year-old freshman James Houston, pictured on the left. It was first published as The Paterson State Beacon, later to be known simply as The Beacon. The paper has covered every major milestone that affected its young readers and seventy years later it still holds the attention and interest of the William Paterson student body. The Beacon is published on Wednesdays, and servers Haledon, North Haledon, Wayne, Paterson and the William Paterson University community. The business and editorial offices are located on the campus of William Paterson University in the Student Center, Room 310. The Beacon Mission: Report information of interest and consequence to its readers. Offer informed and responsible opinions on matters of consequence to its readers. Aspire to professional standards of style, content, and appearance. Serve as the training ground for William Paterson University of New Jersey students. Recognize and address sensitive diverse issues. Carry out the right of free speech to its fullest potential.
The Beacon receives no money from William Paterson University or its student body and therefore relies solely on advertising revenue to operate. The Beacon Weekly is registered with the County of Passaic, NJ. Views expressed in The Beacon Weekly reflect the opinion of the individual writer or artist and are not necessarily those of The Beacon Weekly.
